The Access to Information dimension of the Environmental Democracy Index was assessed on the basis of 34 indicators, which analyze both active transparency - on issues such as logging, environmental licensing, livestock farming, environmental and land regularization - and the existence of norms, policies and platforms that guarantee the right of access to environmental information.
Although some public entities adopt good practices, serious flaws are prevalent. A lot of data is not published, is out of date or is made available in formats that make it difficult to use and analyze. These shortcomings reduce society's ability to monitor public and private actions, report irregularities and demand compliance with environmental legislation.
Among the most sensitive missing data are those on land conflicts, quilombola territories, rural settlements, the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), Animal Transit Permits (GTA) and deforestation permits - all of which are essential for tracking production chains and curbing environmental crimes.
The IDA is an initiative of the Centro de Vida Institute and Transparency International - Brazil, with financial support from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
More than a number, we are a tool for mobilization and transformation.
