The Environmental Democracy Index (IDA) assesses how the states of the Legal Amazon, the federal government and othergovernment and other federal agenciesromote the rights of access to information, participation, justice and protection of environmental defenders. Based on more than 100 indicators, the IDA analyzes the norms, policies and practices of the Executive, Judiciary, Public Prosecutor's Office, Public Defender's Office and police.
The index measures the degree of commitment of public institutions to environmental democracy and the protection of rights in the region. It serves as a tool for monitoring, social pressure and political advocacy, helping to strengthen open and inclusive environmental governance.
By pointing out progress and gaps, the IDA seeks to contribute to strategic debates on environmental and climate justice - especially in contexts such as the COP30 in Brazil and the need for the Escazú Agreement to be approved by the National Congress.
The IDA is an initiative of the Centro de Vida Institute and Transparency International - Brazil, with financial support from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
More than a number, we are a tool for mobilization and transformation.
