Rondônia performs poorly, with serious flaws in participation and protection of defenders
Rondônia scored 32.1 points in the Environmental Democracy Index, ranking fifth among the states of the Legal Amazon. The overall result was classified as "poor", with regular scores in only two dimensions and critical performance in the others.
The best result was in Access to Environmental Justice, with 54.6 points ("regular"). It also had a regular performance in Access to Environmental Information, with 42.1 points. However, it did not achieve full transparency in any of the 29 categories evaluated, with the information available being incomplete, out of date or in a format unsuitable for reuse.
The worst scores were recorded in the Access to Participation (28.2 points - "bad") and Protection of Environmental Defenders (3.7 points - "very bad") dimensions. The results of the former show the need for improvements in the functioning of the state environmental council, conservation unit councils and public hearings for environmental licensing. With regard to the protection of environmental defenders, Rondônia has one of the worst IDA performances. No state program or channels for reporting human rights violations were identified. The security forces have no specific training or procedures for working with defenders.
